As someone who loves all creatures and cringes when I have to crush a spider if I can't get it to crawl onto the newspaper so I can dump it outside, I cringe at the thought of goldfish being handed out as party favors. I can only hope the experience planted a seed (even if ultimately forgotten) to respect and care for all living things. Poor mom (you, not the birthday kid's!).
