Brian, I just now had the pleasure of reading your summaries of these five writers’ books on writing. What a bountiful treat! Thank you so much for capturing the essence of their messages. As a result, I am more than ever motivated to find time to read each one.
One that intrigued me was King’s admonition to read, read, read. You know what I’m finding? I read all the time. But they are not the William Thackeray novels or Ntozake Shange poems I read as a lit major in college.
These days, I read tons and tons of articles — essays in Medium and elsewhere on the Internet. Like when I read the backs of cereal boxes during breakfast as a child, I am compelled to read whatever is in front of me all the time.
I’m just a little more careful now to make sure I’m reading a helpful essay by Brian Rowe instead of Tony the Tiger’s latest exploit in which he once again proves that he is “GRRRREEEEAAAT!”
