Quinton,
So glad to be caught up on what Barbara Ehrenreich has been up to. She seems to have a boundless source of energy. I was first introduced to her during the new wave of feminism that sprung up in the early 70s. In my Women’s Studies classes in college, I read her works with Deirdre English, former editor of Mother Jones:

  • Witches, Midwives, and Nurses: A History of Women Healers (with Deirdre English) (1972)
  • Complaints and Disorders: The Sexual Politics of Sickness (with Deirdre English) (1973)
  • For Her Own Good: Two Centuries of the Experts’ Advice to Women (with Deirdre English) (1978)

Although these books were landmarks in the Women’s Movement, neither of the authors got the recognition they deserved. The last two books ripped the covers off the way that women are taught to “go along to get along” in the doctor’s office. Criminal!

I myself went through identity theft, job loss, breast cancer, and an auto accident in which my car was totaled but I somehow limped away in the space of 2 years. People have told me that God is trying to tell me something; there’s a reason I’m still here.

I think if God is trying to tell me anything, it’s that I was a helluva bitch in a past life and now I’m paying for it. Either that, or a witch I once knew succeeded in putting a hex on me.

I love what you’ve told us she has said about real joy. I’m going to have to go on Amazon and order a few of her books. Thanks for bringing her back to my attention after almost 50 years! And you are a good writer. Pleasure to read your work.
