Remembering Daniel Pearl in the Shadow of Poway

On January 23, 2002, Jewish-American journalist Daniel Pearl was taken hostage by the Pakistani faction of Al-Qai’da, who tortured him for nine days before beheading him on camera.
On April 27, 2019, we prayed for the injured and mourned the dead in Poway, a suburb of San Diego. The shooting victims made the mistake of going to services on the last day of Passover, a celebration of Jewish freedom. They were guilty of blatantly, unashamedly “praying while Jewish” in a society steadily spiraling out of control, a society granting mass permission to take out frustration and hatred on anyone, with Jews always a favorite target.
Catching the Last of Pearl’s Murderers
Those who still care about justice for Daniel Pearl will take some satisfaction in learning that the last executioner in Pearl’s death was arrested in Pakistan the day before the Poway attack. The others, arrested long ago, are serving time. Only one received a death sentence for his part in the murder, but to no one’s surprise, he had it commuted to a life sentence.
The remaining fugitive, Azim Jan, a commander of the TTP (an offshoot of al-Qai’da) was running a suicide bomber training camp in the mountains above…
